Ukraine, Zelensky
International News: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Donald Trump's proposal in which he said that Ukrainian land could be given to Russia under a peace agreement. He said that Ukraine will not give its land to the occupiers. Zelensky said this in a statement released on a social media platform on Saturday. President Trump had said on Friday that the peace agreement would include the exchange of some territories with Russia.
Zelensky said in a message on Telegram early Saturday, “The answer to Ukraine's territorial question is already present in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will deviate from it, nor can anyone deviate from it. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupiers.” He further said, “Any decision against us, any decision without Ukraine, is also a decision against peace.
Nothing will be achieved from these.” Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s sovereignty is non-negotiable, and any attempts to compromise on territorial integrity would only embolden the aggressors. He called on international partners to stand firm against such proposals, warning that giving away land would set a dangerous precedent for the world.
Zelensky's remarks came after Donald Trump announced that his meeting with the Russian president was scheduled to take place in Alaska next week. “My much-anticipated meeting as President of the United States with Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the great state of Alaska,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday.
The choice of Alaska, a state geographically close to Russia, has sparked speculation about the symbolism of the venue. Political analysts believe this meeting could shape the next phase of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and determine the future of US involvement in Eastern Europe.
Earlier on Friday, Trump had indicated at the White House that there had been talks on a possible land exchange as part of a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine. He said, “There will be some land exchange in the interest of both, and we will talk about this tomorrow or later.”
A White House official also said on Friday that Russia has provided a list of demands for a possible ceasefire for the war in Ukraine. The US is trying to get agreement on this list from Ukraine and European allies. Sources close to the negotiations say the list includes territorial concessions, security guarantees, and easing of certain sanctions, a proposal Ukraine has so far strongly resisted.
